Keep a record of what is stored - GM Insurance Brokers recommend that you keep an itinerary of what is in storage.
You may also find it useful to take a number of pictures of the storage unit when you are placing items in storage so that in the event of a loss, you are able to provide evidence to your insurers of the items in storage.
This is not a Bank Safe Deposit Insurance - GM Insurance Brokers recommend that high value items such as jewellery, valuables, watches, precious metals, money, gold and silver and not stored within the storage location – high value items should be stored in a bank safety deposit box.
Complying with your Terms of Storage – ensure you comply with the Terms and Conditions of Storage as provided to you by the Storage Company and that you do not store items which are excluded under the Storage Agreement – or the Storage Insurance policy. You must have terms of storage in place.
Moth and Vermin Cover – GM Insurance advise that if the storage location is "Internal Storage/Internal Access", then you are covered for Moth and Vermin, from a source outside of the storage location. Other locations are not insured for Moth and Vermin.
Store wise and Store safely – The policy does not cover "accidental damage" to your goods, so store your goods safely and in a manner so that no damage is caused to the items stored. If you fold a mattress in half when you store it – it is likely to be permanently damaged and that type of loss is not insured under this policy!
