What is Storage Insurance?

Storage Insurance is a specialist insurance product designed to cover your personal and business items against the specific risks associated with storing them away from home. Storage Insurance covers your belongings whilst they are being stored in approved storage locations. Our storage insurance also covers your possessions whilst in transit to and from a storage location with goods in transit cover included as standard, subject to T&C's. Typically, self storage insurance is a requirement when using reputable storage facilities.

Why do I need Storage Insurance?

When your goods are stored away from your home or business premises, it is very unlikely that they are covered by your household or business insurance.  Some companies may provide limited cover in these circumstances, but, this often has exclusions and inadequate cover limits. Storage insurance covers your belongings against the specific risks associated with storing them. Choosing a dedicated storage insurance provider will ensure you get the best, most appropriate cover for the risks involved whilst you continue to store your belongings.

Why choose us for your Self Storage Insurance?

  • Excellent value cover – most customers save money with us
  • Goods in transit included as standard, subject to T&C's
  • Most storage types covered – including containers
  • UK based dedicated staff – no impersonal call centres
  • Zero excess on standard policies
  • Dedicated claims handler in the event of a claim

As well as offering exceptional value for money and wide-ranging cover, our policies are underwritten by Faraday Underwriting - Syndicate 435 at Lloyd's, offering you the backing of one of the oldest and most respected financial institutions in the UK.

Tips on how to store your contents

Here are just some of the items people store in their units - we've put together some helpful advice on how to ensure your items don't get damage whilst being stored:

Business Storage Insurance

As space is becoming ever more precious, more and more businesses are turning to storage facilities to free up space in cluttered work environments.  Self storage offers the ultimate flexible additional space and is undoubtedly cheaper than the equivalent square footage in office, industrial or retail space.

Keeping business assets which are stored off-site, insured and protected is as important as keeping your business premises and everything inside it safe.  Our business storage insurance covers all the same risks as our personal storage insurance.

Frequently asked questions

What is Storage Insurance?

It covers your possessions from theft or damage whilst in an approved storage facility. It can also cover your possessions whilst in transit to and from the storage location, subject to T&C's.

Do I need to specify my storage unit?

No. The policy covers any number of storage units at the location that you specify.

My storage site/location is not listed, how do I add it?

You can request a site to be added.

If this is urgent, please call us between 9am and 5pm - Monday to Fridays and we will endeavour to add the site immediately, if it is acceptable.

Does my household insurance cover goods in storage?

It is unlikely that a home insurance policy will cover goods in storage on a permanent basis.

We recommend that you check any household insurance that you may hold to see if you are already insured for goods in storage.

Is Moth and Vermin cover included?

Moth and Vermin cover is automatically included if the access to your storage unit is not external.

If the entrance or exit to or from your own lockable room or unit is from the outside, the cover is not provided.

In the Quote process, this is called Internal Storage with Internal Access, a picture is provided at the point of sale to clarify this.

What type of Goods can I Insure?

Essentially there are two types of goods that can be insured. These are Personal Possessions/Household Goods that are normally kept at private residential addresses, these are sometimes referred to as Contents in a Home Insurance policy.

We can also insure certain business goods as well, a list of business goods can be found within the Quote and Buy process. We are unable to offer insurance for Caravans, Motor Homes, Motor Cars and certain other items.

I have a question, who do I ask ?

GM Insurance Brokers can answer any question during their opening hours.

To keep things really quick for all of our customers, please use the Chat facility.

We are open from Monday to Friday, 9am until 5pm, excluding Bank Holidays.

Alternatively, please ask us a question by email at; sales@store-insure.co.uk, or call us on 01392 346531.

Can I renew my policy when it runs out?

The policy is not a renewable policy, but you can click on the “Arrange New Cover” link in the “My Policies” page to arrange further insurance.

Is Personal Jewellery insured?

The policy covers up to 10% of the total sum insured for items of jewellery. There is also a single article limit of £500 for any one single item of jewellery.

We recommend that high value items of jewellery are kept elsewhere, like a bank, in a safety deposit box. Separate insurance should be arranged for items of high value at other locations.

What is the definition of Valuables?

Valuables are defined as;
Jewellery, watches, furs, items or sets or collections of gold, silver or other precious metals, works of art, sets of stamps, coins or medals all belonging to you.

But not:
Property more specifically insured by any other policy.
Property held or used for any profession, Business or employment.

How much should I insure for?

You should always insure for the new replacement cost of all items in storage.
